XML in Healthcare
Wed 27th - Thurs 28th July 2005

Chair: Ron Summers
Speakers: Liora Alschuler, Debbie Hagger, Dave Nurse, Murray Bywater, Jim Whurr, Ian White, Ann Wrightson

Description: This two-day seminar is aimed specifically at healthcare IT professionals, planners, managers and clinical IT users who need to understand the way in which XML is being applied to information management in healthcare, across the world. The seminar is suitable for those who already have an understanding of XML and its healthcare applications, who want to hear about the latest thinking an technology and to network with their peers. The seminar will also be useful for newcomers who have attended the hands-on introduction to XML on the first two days of the Summer School.

The topics cover the application of XML standards in the NHS and on a worldwide basis, with an emphasis on health records management associated issues and technologies. The lectures are presented by world-recognised experts, who have practical experience of planning and implementing XML-based systems in healthcare, and provide the opportunity to meet and discuss the issues that are most relevant and important to you. The aim is to be informative, controversial and entertaining.

Day One

XML Standards in Healthcare:

  • XML and open standards applied in healthcare
A survey of how XML and related open standards are currently being applied in healthcare. Serving as a useful introduction for those who are new to the subject, and an update on current initiatives and thinking, particularly now that the National Programme for IT(NPfIT) in England is underway.
  • HL7 implementation practice
HL7 has been widely adopted as a standard for representing and exchanging healthcare information. This lecture provides a brief overview of key concepts of HL7 and focuses on how the XML implementation of HL7 is being adopted across the world.

XML at work in the NHS:

  • XML and the clinical process - shared care in the NHS
Real world experience and practical advice on how National Service Frameworks and Integrated Care Pathways can be implemented using XML-based records, forms input and process management.
  • Supporting the delivery of care with XML-based health records
Providing a view on a complete patient journey through the NHS, showing how an XML-based health record, delivered at the point of care, supports clinical practice across the caring professions. This lecture focuses on the way in which XML systems architectures impact on end users.

Day Two

Architectures for health records management:

  • National architectures and infrastructure for health records
The National Programme for IT(NPfIT) in England is demonstrating how the architecture and infrastructure for health records can be rolled out on a national scale. This lecture considers some of the features of the architecture and infrastructure required to implement large-scale health records systems using XML and HL7 messaging.
  • Connecting the clinical record with knowledge bases
XML can provide the 'glue' between the routine clinical record and integrated knowledge bases, which can deliver decision support to clinicians as they interact with the care records system. This lecture shows how unified XML architectures can be created for the care records system, the knowledge management system, knowledge delivery system and reasoning engines, with the clinical context propagated between those systems using the HL7 CCOW standard and SNOMED-CT clinical coding.

XML in the global 'healthcare economy':

  • Models, Messages and Services: XML and open standards in the global healthcare economy
It’s a big world and a complex picture, and this presentation will help you make sense of the complexity and appreciate the issues involved. Models, Messages and Services are the three key strategies for interoperability using open standards; key examples of each approach in healthcare are discussed, together with where and how they are used, and likely future developments.
  • A global market for standards-based health records
The NHS in England has pioneered the way forward for health records using open standards technology. This lecture examines the current status of standards-based health records initiatives around the world and assesses the future direction and requirements for deployment using and other open standards in global markets.

*The cost of the two-day XML in Healthcare track includes two nights accommodation at Wadham College, meals, refreshments & social events.
