Hands-on Track

Hands-on Introduction to XML
28th-29th July (full Summer School package only)
This two-day track provides a complete and practical introduction to XML for those with little previous experience. Packed with hands-on exercises using a cross section of the latest XML tools and applications, this track will rapidly bring beginners up to speed so that they can make the most of the more advanced sessions in the Seminar Track later in the Summer School.

This track explains the many and varied aspects of XML design, processing and delivery through practical, hands-on workshops where you will create your own XML documents. You will learn how to create data structures using an XML editor, create an XML schema model and parse/validate the document structure.

Also, we give you the opportunity to gain an understanding of the latest XML tools and technologies in the marketplace so that you can develop and implement your own XML solutions.

This course gives you maximum opportunity to interact with the presenter, to ask questions relating to your own XML applications and to gain the maximum benefit from two days of intensive hands-on learning.

Topics covered over the two days include:

  • Introducing XML
  • Stuctured Mark-up with XML
  • Cascading Stylesheets
  • Creating Structured Documents
  • Namespaces in XML
  • XML Schemas
  • Transformation with XSLT
  • XML and Non-XML Data Files
  • Pagination with XSL-FO

Prerequisites: The track is designed for delegates with little or no experience of XML, giving a solid foundation on which to base further exploration. Little previous knowledge is required, although a familiarity with word processing and the Windows operating systems would be useful.
